Amann Girrbach (AG) has just announced the largest new product launch likely in the history of dental technology. This include 2 scanners, several mills and over 50 new advancements that will help labs thrive. For the purpose of this blog, I want to share changes made to the wet – dry 5 axis Motion 2 mill. Amazingly, AG has taken what was the most versatile mill in our industry and made it so much better. That said, the number of indications and materials is so comprehensive I will leave that for another blog. Let’s take a look inside the all new Motion 2.
Historically, mill manufacturers have used off the shelf circuit boards to control mill functions. AG has changed this, they have taken on the project of redesigning these circuit boards and are now manufacturing these in-house. This has added so much to the functionality of the M2 mill as there are nearly no limitations to the controller. Next is a 750 W spindle with a maximum speed of 100K RPM’s. This spindle is 3X more powerful than the predecessor and almost double the RPM’s. For a comparative spindle and speed analysis see below.
In addition to milling e.max in just 9-15 minutes (small units take less time) the M2 mills everything more quickly as the combined mill specific control board and control software and faster spindle provide increased productivity.
Another first, a totally new approach to “carving” e.max, blue block. This is a move away from the more conventional grinding process and all the related problems with this several decade old milling strategy. The unique IP put into the M2 mill strategy when first viewed is amazing. Rather than grinding the entire block to a crown form the M2 carves out the outer perimeter of the crown form along the long axis of the restoration, carving out the the tooth form from the block. Once the perimeter is carved out a significant part of the excess block drops to the mill floor. This reduces mill time to just 9-15 minutes, faster for smaller restorations. This saves time and tool cost as much of the block is never turned into dust.
Like the old M2, the new has 6 arms or interchangeable fixtures for a wide variety of materials and indications and no limits on adding new fixtures in the future. Built for the future this is a mill that any lab must look at prior to making a new mill purchase.
